Cambridge Guild of Benefactors, September 2026

On 23 September 2026, Andrew Barnes and Charlotte Lockhart joined the University of Cambridge’s annual Guild of Benefactors celebration, in recognition of their gift to the Charlotte Lockhart Precision Breast Cancer Institute.

The Guild of Cambridge Benefactors was launched in 1998 to recognise people whose giving supports the University and its Colleges. Members’ names are recorded on the Benefactors’ Staircase in the Old Schools. Andrew and Charlotte were admitted to the Guild at this year’s ceremony.

The recognition follows a £10 million gift, made through the Barnes Lockhart September Giving Trust, to establish the Charlotte Lockhart Precision Breast Cancer Institute. Led by Professor Jean Abraham, the institute will use advanced technology, including AI, to analyze each patient’s genomic, molecular and clinical data, with the aim of matching them to the most effective treatment. It will be part of the new Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital, due to be completed in 2030.

For Andrew, Cambridge is where much of his story began. He came to Selwyn College in 1978 from a state school in Lancashire to study law and archaeology, and has described the University as the catalyst that opened doors for him.

For Charlotte, the work is personal. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2021. “Without research, I wouldn’t be here today,” she has said.

Charlotte was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and philanthropy in the King’s Birthday and Coronation Honours List in 2023.

The honour recognised her contribution to workplace change as well as her broader social impact.
